from last night when most people went to bed, hurricane watch now issued for the virginia coastline in addition to most of the north carolina. got a map to show you. we'll take another quick look at earl. surf city, north carolina to paramour island, that is under a hurricane watch. the watch has been extended. don't be surprised if later today, it is not extended further north up into maryland, maybe new jersey, up into southern new england later this afternoon. 125miles per hour. that makes it a category three storm. it has lost a little steam overnight. still a very formidable, very powerful hurricane. so tracking off to the north and west at 16 miles per hour. it will be just off outer banks by overnight thursday into friday morning. so we'll see how things start to go downhill here over the next couple of days. for us, just a hot one. right now, we are in the 70s. 76 at reagan national. 70 in baltimore. 71 for you in ocean city. our forecast is easy. lots of sunshine. it will be hot this afternoon with highs back in the middle 90s. 95 intown. 96 in waldorf. 94, one of the coole

been extended to include the virginia coastline. the storm has weakened. but let's go to vipir. first a quick look at hurricane watch. surf city, north carolina to paramour island, virginia, under a hurricane watch. don't be surprised if this doesn't get extended up into new jersey this afternoon. now to vipir. let's take a look the at storm -- at the storm, maximum winds 125, gusts over 140 and charging off to the north and west at 16 miles per hour. likely to keep this intensity as it approaching the carolina coastline overnight thursday and into friday morning and then charge up the coast during the day on friday. so watch this carefully over the next couple of days. locally we're doing fine. today is going to be another hot, sunny day with afternoon high temperatures back into the 90s. currently we're 76 degrees at reagan national. humidity 65%. winds shifting later out of the south here at about 5 miles per hour. but all in all, not a bad day. 95 degrees the afternoon high with a lot of sunshine. one more hot afternoon and then we'll start a cooldown which will include 80s this w

with maryland license plates. >>> also making headlines being homes in a virginia subdivision reduced to rubble. now, firefighters want to know what started this massive fire in manassas. as many as 16 people have been forced from their homes because of this fire. the fire broke out around 3:30 yesterday afternoon along tillot loop. one woman was taken to the hospital from just the shock of seeing her home burned to the ground. it took firefighters an hour and a half to bring that blaze under control. they believe the fire started in the middle house and then quickly spread in both directions from there. now, again, three homes were destroyed. five others were damaged. and the red cross is helping displaced families find temporary shelter. still no word on what started a fire that killed a virginia mother and two of her children. ally anderson saved three of her children as her lorton town home burned on wednesday. she managed to lower them out a window down to their uncle but then she went back to get her youngest sons but neither she nor her sons made it out. neighbors tried to help out but c

here and you can see shower activity into central virginia. look at the dark yellow or reds off the carolina coast. this is storm activity and some of it has been severe. all of that is lifting up fors the mid-atlantic. so later this afternoon, in addition to rain, we could be talking about the potential for some thunderstorm activity and with it, the potential for some flash flooding as we could pick up between 1-3, maybe in a few spots to the west 4 inches of rain, over the next 24 hours. and we'll get a lot of rain in the next 24 hours because the area of low pressure will lift up out of the app latchans and out -- app latchans. and 72 for you in leonardtown. our high temperatures only in the mid-70s, which is well below where we should be, with a good chance we'll see afternoon showers and thunderstorms, not just this morning but in the late afternoon. rainy, could be a thunderstorm. winds out of the south and east at 5-10. clouds tonight and rain continues, 68. winds out of the south and east at 10 miles per hour. we'll get it out of here tomorrow morning. by tomorrow after

. slow traffic as you work your way south of montrose road to the split. in virginia, northbound i-95 slowing out of dale city trying to head north of the prince william parkway. no accidents, just volume. 66 slows at business 234. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. >>> a speeding suv collides with an ambulance overnight. stacy cohan joins us live with the details. >> reporter: it was a very scary moment for the folk in the ambulance apparently. this happened just around midnight. they were just dispatched heading westbound on marlboro pike. and apparently, investigators were able to watch it all unfold on a dash cam that took video from the ambulance. the suburban was heading the wrong with a just speeding down when it was approaching the ambulance head on. the driver of the ambulance managed to swerve to the left and the suv, the suburban lipped the side of the ambulance, literally shaving half of that ambulance off and then it went another 40 yards, crashed into a brick wall, crashed into a utility pole and flipped up on its roof. all three members in that suv, three men

by the virginia tech transportation institute shows nearly 80% of all crashes and 65% of all near crashes involve driver in attention due to distraction. >> i say the most important thing about driving is alertness. it's not so much ability but alertness. >> reporter: the new distracted driving campaign combines public education and awareness with district enforcement. officers are being posted at intersections and along roads and areas like tyson's corner where there is high volume and a high number of crashes, but police will also be keeping watch on less traveled locations. >> if they're swerving or braking inappropriately. if they're not going a green light because they're doing some of these things, we're going to stop and charge them. >> reporter: in addition to the increased enforcement efforts, fairfax police will launch a new study focusing on texting. the goal is to better understand how people view distracted driving so safety and education efforts can be better targeted keeping the roadways safer for everyone. in tyson's corner maureen umeh, fox 5 news. >>> fairfax county police are a

the virginia visitor's center and nutley street to the beltway. delays on braddock eastbound toward the beltway, also on 50 delays from fairfax circle to the beltway. a crash on 15 and that's tieing up the right side of the road. no problems in montgomery county. slow from the 410 out of riverdale into the northeast. that's a check of your fox 5 on- time traffic. >>> our top story this morning, a deadly crash in district heights overnight involving an suv and ambulance. two people were killed. two medics are being treated. stacy cohan has the details. >> reporter: this happened around midnight, this collision between an ambulance and the suv. they do have the suburban involved in the crash up on a flatbed tow truck and they remove it and reopen this roadway. to learn more about what happened, all of the fire investigators had to do was take a look at the dashboard camera in the ambulance and they were able to watch the accident happen. >> in the distance on the dash cam you can see a set of headlights approaching that appears to be in the same lane of travel but coming in the opposite direction

left with no food and water at a farm that was supposed to rescue them. the west virginia operation was shut down. 53 horses were seized. late today one of those animals died and 20 others were adopted. fox 5's sherri ly has the latest from martinsburg. >> reporter: when berkeley county sheriff's deputies found these horses, they were malnourished, so emaciated many had ribs and bones protruding. >> these horses are standing 24 hours a day in front of the bales of hay and just eating. >> reporter: eight horses were already dead or had to be put down. veterinarian christine bridges is working night and day trying to save the 53 others that survived. you think you can save them? >> we're trying. i'm hopeful. >> reporter: investigators seized l the horses from hidden meadows -- the horses from hidden meadows equine rescue, a martinsburg nonprofit that touted itself as a rescue home. some of these animals are former race horses like this one. two months ago it was brought to the farm. i can't show you the picture because it's evidence, but i've seen it. the horse was perfectly healthy.

friend is accused of hiding the gun at a nearby playground after the shooting. >>> a virginia community is mourning tonight after the sudden death of a star high school football player. austin trenum was found unresponsive at his home this morning. went to district high school in nokesville. a cause of death was not confirmed but they tell fox 5 the death does not appear to be accidental. >> he of the one person that everybody was friends -- he was the one person that everybody was friends. with he was funny and could pretty much make everybody laugh and feel better in an instant. it's hard. everybody is taking it hard. >> austin's family released a statement saying in part austin was a wonderful son, brother and grandson. he was deeply loved by his family and highly respected by his teammates, friends and classmates. funeral arrangements are being made. >>> president obama said it flat out, d.c. schools are not good enough for his daughters. that's right after his secretary of education complimented schools chancellor michelle rhee on the job she's done. fox 5's roby chavez has more.
